Thieves set up rental car firm to steal vehicles

Two thieves in Malaysia set up a company that rented cars from their owners, sold off the vehicles and then fled the area.

In all, a total of 23 cars worth RM1.44 million were involved in the scam.

State police eventually caught the two men, arresting them on 30 and 31 December.

The first, a 25-year-old man, from Johor, was arrested at his home in Batu Pahat and his 26-year-old accomplice was arrested the following day, at his home in Pasir Mas, Kelantan.

In the process, the police also seized 300 folders with documents related to cars involved in the operation.

The state police’s Senior Assistant Commissioner II Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman indicated that the two suspects set up a company, Carador ATM Transport Services, in Kuala Terengganu in May, and offered car owners a monthly fee of RM1,200-2,000 for the use of their vehicles as rental cars.

Once they were in possession of the vehicles, they would then sell them to unsuspecting buyers at amounts of as much as RM6,000.

“They tell the potential buyers that the owners are facing financial difficulties and are looking for someone to continue paying the loan,” the police spokesman said.

The spokesman added that the people who actually owned the cars had only lodged complaints with the police recently when they did not receive the payments that had been promised for the ‘rental’ of the vehicles.

He asked those who had purchased cars from the company to contact the police immediately.

Both suspects were being held at the Kuala Terengganu police station until arraignment.
