Those looking to rent a car should think twice before changing car rental dates, asking for a different car or modifying the set itinerary in any other way. Travel expert Sophie Butler of the Telegraph reminded prospective car renters that it is usually possible to make changes to a car hire up to 24 hours prior to the indicated date of pick-up. Yet clients must remember that even if their changes should make the rental less expensive (either because they have selected different dates, or a more economical car), most car hire firms will still require that the customer pay the original price. On the other hand, firms like Avis note that if the changes cause the price of a rental car to increase, clients will be required to pay the difference when collecting the vehicle.

Each car hire firm has different policies in terms of how to modify reservations and the bottom line is that it is important for clients to understand these rules before committing to any changes. For example, Hertz is fairly liberal when it comes to making modifications, as it allows clients to modify their rental over the internet, while other companies continue to require that this be done over the telephone. Yet it is important to keep in mind that Hertz will not allow clients to change the pick-up location, or alter the name of the primary driver. Additionally, those looking to cancel their Hertz booking may do so for free, provided that the cancellation occurs within a week of the booking. After this date, however, a refund charge of £30 is normally applicable.
