Third runway at Heathrow gets MPs backing
Posted on: December 8th, 2009 by Samantha WilliamsThe proposed third runway at Heathrow Airport has received the backing by MPs just ahead of a report that is due out on the aviation sector’s progress in meeting the climate targets that have been set. Aircrafts are continuously queuing on the tarmac and in the air and the runway is much needed according to many professionals. An independent report in the aviation industry’s negative contribution is set to be released today and MPs gave the government their backing just before its release.
Heathrow is Britain’s largest airport and its expansion plans should lead to passengers enjoying a far more reliable flight schedule. The House of Commons also added that they feel that a second proposed runway would benefit Gatwick more than Stansted and that along with the new runway at Heathrow, visitors can also expect a new terminal building. A second proposed runway at Stansted will not be completed until 2019 and due to the delay MPs argue that Gatwick should be given the new runway instead.
As well as giving their approval of the third runway, the government also proposed a way forward in the battle against carbon emissions and they released targeted figures that included reducing the aviation industry’s carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 to 2005. The Conservative party along with the Liberal Democrats are opposed to the expansion plans and there are numerous campaigns against the third runway. Noise pollution along with fears for the safety of the environment are the primary reasons for those opposing the runway.
