Thomas Cook, the second-largest travel company in Europe, revealed that is in discussion with its works council regarding cost-cutting plans, which could include job cuts.

“But as long as talks with the works council are ongoing, it would be inappropriate to discuss details publicly,” the company indicated in a statement.

Der Spiegel, the German weekly, reported earlier that Thomas Cook would be cutting costs in the IT, sales and staff areas, which could mean the loss of as many as 250 jobs.

The magazine also indicated that the travel company may be replacing customer service staff at holiday destinations with a hotline that customers could call. A source familiar with the company’s plans said that headcount could be reduced through attrition and retirement.

Thomas Cook was formed in 2007 in a tie-up of the travel unit of German retailer Arcandor and MyTravel of Britain.

The company has also reduced the number of holidays it is offering for sale, in a move similar to that of rival TUI Travel, to offset the decline in demand for travel caused by the recession.
