Thomas Cook to introduce checked bag fee

Thomas Cook Airlines has revealed that it will soon be charging its passengers a fee of up to £30 to check a bag on one of its long-haul return flights.

Currently, British holidaymakers have a free checked baggage allowance of 15kgs. From 2 March, however, customers who have made flight-only bookings will have to pay £8 each way to check a bag on short-haul flights and £15 on long-haul flights. The weight limit for the checked bag is 20kgs.

The hand luggage limit remains unchanged, at 5kgs. For those who book a package holiday through Thomas Cook, these new charges will not apply.

“Any passengers wishing to check-in any additional hold luggage, of up to 20kg, can do so for an additional charge,” said a Thomas Cook spokesperson. “This change to charges is in line with the flight-only market. Package holiday bookings where a charter flight is included are not affected by this change.”

The spokesman noted that for those customers with bookings made before 2 March, the free 15kgs allowance for a checked-in bag will apply.

Similar bag fees on flight-only bookings have already been levied by First Choice Airways and Thomsonfly.
