Thomas Cook to relaunch limited Tunisia holiday collection for Brits

IBEROSTAR AverroesTravel agency Thomas Cook has announced holidays in Tunisia are back on the menu for UK travellers. Cook’s customer welfare boss, Carol MacKenzie, told media sources a limited programme of holidays to the North African country had been added to UK brochures.

The first holidays are for next February and Ms MacKenzie notes that the options are for just eight hotels and all in the vicinity of Hammamet. She explained that the principal reasons for adding Tunisia back to the firm’s holiday options were twofold.

The first was that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has upgraded its travel advice for Tunisia and says the threat of terror attacks are less likely than they were two years ago. Following an attack at the resort of Sousse in June 2015, the FCO said people should only go to Tunisia if they really had to.

Ms MacKenzie stated that the second reason holidays in Tunisia were back on timetables was that customers had asked for them. She carried on by saying choosing a holiday destination for loved ones was a decision not made lightly and at the end of the day customers had the right to specify where they wanted to go.

A total of 30 British nationals were among the 38 who lost their lives when gunman Seifeddine Rezgui went on a rampage in Sousse. Saying the FCO understood security, Thomas Cook pulled the plug on UK to Tunisia holidays when the travel advisory was updated in 2015.

Contrarily, the company did not remove its Tunisian holidays from brochures in Belgium, France and Germany. The governments of these countries did not issue travel alerts saying Tunisia was dangerous and more terrorist attacks were highly likely.
