Thomas Cook staff protest with a camel

Five staff from Thomas Cook branches in Dublin were flown over to London by Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA), their union to protest at the proposed restructuring of the Irish side of the company. They arrived at managing director, Manny Fontenla-Novoa’s Catholic Church with a camel in tow.
He was not at the church however so the five handed a letter to his home pleading with him to attend talks. “We are making this unusual demonstration to appeal to your conscience over your company’s plans to close down its Irish operation and sack 46 loyal staff at a time of record unemployment in the Republic. We would ask you to personally intervene in this dispute and look again at Thomas Cook’s decision to pull out of Ireland after more than 125 years service,” said one of the five.
Thomas Cook had earlier pulled out of talks with its Irish staff after considering proposals about saving the operation in the Republic. There are three branches in Dublin that are set for closure. Staff had previously agreed to forego a three per cent salary increase, that was followed by a letter to all saying that they intend to close the three in four weeks.
