Thomson Cruises to Reintroduce Sailings from UK

It’s been recently announced from Thomson Cruises that they plan to reintroduce sailings from the UK in summer 2012. This comes 3 years after the line stopped offering the cruises.

From May to July 2012, the Thomson Spirit will be based in Newcastle, and then it will be based in Harwich from August to September. The 1,254-passenger vessel will offer different itineraries during both periods, including old cruise destinations to the Baltic, Norwegian Fjord and Iceland. The line will also offer new journeys to various islands, including the Orkneys, Isle of Mull, Isle of Man and Guernsey. Prices will start at £949 per person.

The decision to reintroduce British cruises comes as the Passenger Shipping Association releases figures showing that cruise departures in the country rose 10% last year, while over 650,000 people chose to cruise from Britain. Also, P&O Cruises previously announced that they will reintroduce 148 cruise itineraries for summer and autumn 2012.

The company has chosen Newcastle as a port to give cruisers in the north more options, as they have long distances to travel to get to southern ports, where a majority of the ships are traveling from. A spokeswoman said the city has been a success before, backed by the strong sales from their retail outlets in the area.

Thomson Cruises commercial general manager Phil Gardner said that they are very excited, as a British cruise company, to be offering cruises from the UK again. They have widened the portfolio of destinations on offer to give customers more choice, he continued, and they have listened to customers who have asked that the UK program return. Cruisers will now be able to experience the great value, service and holiday they get on a Thomson Cruise without having to get on a plane, he added.
