Thomson.co.uk steps into the future
Posted on: March 27th, 2008 by BenPTime travel, as envisioned by science fiction writers and scientists may still be a distant reality, but the UK’s most popular travel web site Thomson.co.uk has already decided to jump right into the future with a host of technological advances like virtual holiday experiences and holodecks.
A host of initiatives have already modernized our outlook towards choosing a holiday. Like Thomson.co.uk’s Google powered search engine, which enables travelers to get a feel of a particular area by virtually visiting it, with the click of the mouse, and the TripAdvisor ratings that are referred by the company in discussing quality with hoteliers. There is also “live whether tracker”, which can be used to check weather-related information about their places of interest.
Graham Donoghue, New Media Director of Thomson is jubilant about the new changes in the offing that will totally transform the way foreign trips are currently organized. Thomson itself has seen a total transformation with about 40% of all its bookings being made online. In the past, even this would have seemed like science fiction.
Holodecks, are all set to bring real holiday experiences to the travelers– Start Trek style. Customers will soon be able to visit virtual hotels, which will look and feel real with their holograms and generated smells and sounds. Real sensations like that of walking on the beach, mountain skiing, or good old partying will be felt.
Customers will also be able to store holiday information in their mobile phones that can be used by travel agents for trip-planning. Also, a system will be put in place that will track the travelers using their mobile phones and display their location on the computer screen.
