After the wet summer that was enjoyed through the gritted teeth of ‘staycationers’ this year, it comes as no surprise that holiday bookings for next year are already selling fast. Instead of places like Brighton and Torquay being the main destinations, trips are being booked for Benidorm and Turkey and it more likely that Brits heading to these places will see a little more sun than the UK did all summer.
Earlier on in the year the Met Office issued a weather prediction for the summer in the UK. They said it was going to be a ‘barbeque summer’ meaning that the UK would be in for some great weather. Fuelled by the worldwide recession and the need to save some money, many Britons decided to forego their annual gathering on some foreign beach and take trips a little closer to home. The weather started good in June, but after a couple of weeks it just deteriorated. Late July just around when the kids were breaking up from school, the Met Office took back their first statement and changed it to a wet summer.
Thomas Cook chief executive, Manny Fontenla-Novoa, has said that their bookings for holidays next year are already way ahead of their initial predictions, after summer 2010 brochures were just released. Mr Fontenla-Novoa says it is all because of the lack of sun experienced in Britain this year. Some parts of the country had rain everyday in August and July was said to be the wettest since records began almost 100-years ago.
