Thousands killed in Libya according to UN

Reports from Libya have indicated that thousands might have been murdered or injured during the government’s escalated crackdown this week, UN human rights chief Navi Pillay has said.

Over the past week, the fighting has raged between opposition forces and troops that are loyal to Libyan dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, who has been in power for over 42 years.

His country’s food supply chain is currently at risk of collapsing, according to the UN’s food agency, and Nato defence ministers are set to hold emergency talks today.  Around the country’s capital, Tripoli, an elite task force that is commanded by Colonel Gaddafi’s son Khamis is reported to be dug in.

Britain and France are making pushes for arms embargos and war crimes investigations to start immediately. Libyan state television has said that the government will hand each family 500 dinars to cover increased costs of food, while many public sector workers are going to be awarded with a pay rise of at least 150%.  However most of the nation is now under the control of anti-government forces.

In Geneva, the UN’s Human Rights Council has been meeting in special session to discuss the ongoing crisis in Libya. While Libya is actually an elected member of this specialist organisation, many members have made calls for it to lose the seat that it has.

In an attempt to flee the country, thousands of foreign nationals hailing from Nato member states headed to Tripoli Airport and, unfortunately, many of them have been left stranded.
