Three arrested in death of Australian tourist in Goa

Additional details have come to light regarding the murder of a tourist from Australia during a bar brawl in the Indian resort of Goa.

A security guard and two waiters were arrested on suspicion of having beaten John Kelly, from West Australia, to death at a north Goa beachside bar, according to reports in the Indian media.

Panaji police are alleging that 65-year-old Kelly was assaulted at the Club City restaurant on Calangute Beach, which is a popular spot lined with bars and eateries. The assault occurred after he complained about the service after ordering a beer.

Manak Basak, Jaykrishna Das and Jagat Pradhan, the three alleged attackers, have been questioned by the police in the ongoing murder investigation.

Tushar Vernekar, a police inspector, said that Kelly “disappeared” after the fight, and returned to the guest house where he was staying, in Candolim, approximately five kilometers from the scene of the incident, according to a report in The Times of India.

The police inspector investigating the case commented: “We sent a beat constable to the spot after getting an information about the incident at 8am.”

“By that time, John had already left. He was not traceable and we located him only at 1.30 pm, when we received wireless message from the hospital.”
