Tour operator eliminates single supplement on select cruises
Posted on: December 4th, 2008 by Robert BergersonOverseas Adventure Travel (OAT) announced some good news for single cruisers this week as the company outlined it plans to eliminate the single supplement on many of its cruises for 2009.
The Boston-based operator, which claims that it’s the world’s leading adventure travel company for the over 50s, is also eliminating single supplements on its 2009 land tours. OAT will also launch a new line of vacations for women only.
An OAT executive has reported that the number of women signing up for its trips has tripled in five years – soaring from 13,500 in 2003 and reaching 40,000 this year – and many are single. As compared with just a few years ago, women now account for 70 percent of the tour company’s business, the executive added.
“In the past, many (single women) were reluctant to travel in groups where the majority was part of a couple, but that has certainly changed as more women, either married or single, choose to travel either alone, without their spouse, or with a female friend,” said the co-chair of OAT, Harriett Lewis.
The tour operator anticipates 47,000 women customers next year, and is projecting that 26,000 will travel alone or with a female friend. The average age of their female customer is 66.
