Tour operators considering cancelling China trips

Tour groups from Hong Kong are considering cancelling some trip into the rioting areas of China. One group is already known to have skipped out on Urumqi after riots broke out.
A group from China Travel Service (CTS) that left Hong Kong over a week ago had decided not to head for Xinjiang and instead opted for another night in Turfan. They were expected to fly on to Xian before travelling back to Hong Kong earlier this week. “It has to do with the safety of our customers, because we don’t have a clear picture of the situation,” said Ng Hi-on, deputy manager for CTS. Another of their groups is expected to depart on Friday and arrive in Urumqi on the 16th or 17th July.
So far CTS have said that no customers have pulled out of the tours but they will closely monitor the situation and if needs be, will change the schedule.
Another operator Hong Thai Travel (HTT) had been in Urumqi and left without any problems. “I’m not too worried. I think it should be fine. We couldn’t go to the city center, but we could still visit the suburbs,” said one of the HTT group.
Both companies said that would wait to see what happened in the next few days before making a decision on tours to the area.
