Tourism income in South Wales expected to rise
Posted on: January 23rd, 2009 by Martin FellowesIt is anticipated that the current economic downturn will give a boost to the tourism sector in South West Wales, as increasing numbers of UK holidaymakers are choosing to stay closer to home rather than take more expensive trips abroad.
The euro’s strength in relation to the pound is bringing more tourists from the continent to the UK as well, and many are finding their way to South Wales.
As the summer approaches and more people decide to take their summer breaks at home, there will be additional opportunities for leisure business operators to increase their take as well.
Ferry services that link Swansea with Irish ports and to Devon provide a potential flow of visitors, increasing the reasons for optimism regarding the future of area tourism.
Geoff Haden, a consultant to Tourism Swansea Bay, said: “There’s definitely opportunities for tourism in the region.”
He added: “Clearly fewer people are going to go abroad and more visitors from Europe will come over, because of the strength of the euro against the pound. People who stay at home will also be looking for things to do locally.”
Haden stressed that the key to any success in tourism is marketing.
“You can’t just sit there and think everything will come to you,” he said. “It’s vital that we market the area in any way possible so we get an advantage on the areas around us.”
