Some major players in the airline industry have announced cut backs on routes this winter season. British Airways (BA) said they were canceling some Gatwick Airport flights that travel to places like Madrid, Barcelona and Krakow for the winter season. Ryanair also stepped in and announced that they would be cutting back on UK flights and moving some of their fleet to Spain, blaming the action on the increased cost of using UK airports.
However, train operators and travel agents are moving to promote rail travel more now than ever before. Passengers can now travel from more than 200 cities in the UK through to France on the Eurostar with just one ticket, previously Brits had to buy separate tickets for onward journeys involving the Eurostar.
Some other tour operators are also changing their itineraries for the 2010 season with a lot more travel being offered by train instead of air. “High-speed rail is capturing the imagination as the new alternative to short-haul flights and the launch next year of high speed rail services between Brussels and Amsterdam will put a range of Dutch cities within three to four hours of London,” said Nick Mercer of Eurostar.
