Travel industry executives set emissions target
Posted on: February 20th, 2009 by Taylor SmithThe World Travel & Tourism Council is urging the industry to support the reduction of 2005 carbon emissions levels by 50 per cent by 2035.
In a report called “Leading the Challenge on Climate Change” industry executives launched a 10-point plan under the Prince of Wales’ patronage.
A web portal will be developed as the next step in the plan, to promote information on carbon emissions reduction and on examples of best practices currently underway.
The WTTC will use the web portal and the new report to educate and inform public and commercial policymakers.
An interim ‘aspirational’ target that is set out in the report calls for a cut in emissions levels of 30 per cent by 2020, if an international agreement is reached, or by 25 per cent without such an agreement.
Additional action points in the plan include accountability and responsibility; educating customers and stakeholders; innovation, capital investment and infrastructure within the industry; local community growth and capacity building; and the greening of supply chains.
Jean-Claude Baumgarten, the president and CEO of the WTTC, said: “This report represents a collective effort and is a joint message for the travel and tourism industry.”
“The publication and wide dissemination of this report reflects WTTC’s commitment to the critical issue of climate change.”
