Travelers cutting back on car rental spending
Posted on: January 7th, 2009 by Robert BergersonA survey conducted by the rental car company Alamo Rent a Car is showing that in 2008 travelers spent 37 per cent less on their holidays than they did in 2007.
Areas in which holidaymakers sought to save money included airfares, accommodation and car rental. Forty-eight per cent attempted to reduce airfare costs, 35 per cent focused on accommodation and 33 per cent on car rental costs.
The Alamo study also found that although families have reported a tightening in spending habits in general, very few have changed holiday plans.
More than 300 rental car customers participated in the survey that revealed 83 per cent went on at least the same number of overseas holidays in 2008 as they had in the previous year.
Rising costs and worsening economic conditions are creating increasing pressure on family finances, but 34 per cent reported that they took two foreign holidays in 2008, 30 per cent said they had gone on three and 66 per cent reported taking the same number of holidays in 2008 as in the previous year.
The remaining respondents were evenly split, with 17 per cent saying they took more holidays abroad in 2008 and the same percentage saying they went on fewer holidays than in 2007.
Alamo’s director of marketing, Amy Dorrington, said: “It’s interesting to see that 91% of all those surveyed took a holiday abroad in 2008.”
