Travelers renting a vehicle at Miami’s airport can expect to pay more
Posted on: August 9th, 2007 by Hannah WestfieldTravelers who choose to rent a car from any number of dealers at
Miami International Airport will now have to deal with increased fees, as the airport builds new facilities and improves its link to the area’s intercity bus and Amtrak network. Car hire customers will soon have to pay an additional $4 for each day that they rent a vehicle. This fee is expected to increase to $4.60 within the next four years. Clients will, however, eventually stand to benefit from a much improved car rental facility at the airport. Airport facility improvements combined are expected to cost over $1.3 billion.
Some Miami-Dade county commissioners, however, are opposed to the increases, most notably Audrey Edmonson who has demanded that rental firms cover at least 50% of the newly increased daily improvement fee, rather than simply passing the burden down to customers. Many commissioners, however, feel that passing any motion to require companies to cover the surcharge would simply result in higher rental fees, demonstrating that clients are still likely to foot the bill, one way or another.
There is, however, something that travelers can do to avoid paying the $4 per day extra. Car rental agencies are available throughout
Miami and many will be able to transport the rented vehicle for free, or for a minimal charge, to the client’s hotel. As such, simply taking a bus from the airport to the city and renting a car elsewhere may serve as a more economical option for many travelers.

Another dose of bad news for the frequent traveler. Why must we be billed an additional $4 each day for a rented vehicle. I regard all increases in expenses as retrograde steps.
