Travelodge survey reveals Britons opting for 2017 summer staycations

Newquay BeachTravelodge’s annual study of the holidaying trends of Britons has revealed more than half will be staying in the UK this year. Of the 3,000 respondents quizzed for the 2017 survey, 55 per cent said they would be taking staycations as going abroad was simply too expensive given the current economic climate.

Cornwall remains the number one choice for staycations when compared to last year, but the trend for seaside holidays pushed London down from second to fourth position. In the 2017 rankings, Devon hopped up from third to second.

The Lake District was third in this year’s table and North Wales in fifth. In the top ten, the Scottish Highlands, Edinburgh, Blackpool, the Norfolk Broads and the Isle of Wight took sixth to tenth positions in that order.

The survey also found one third of the stay at home Britons were doing so because they wanted to contribute to the national economy following the Brexit leave vote. Another major revelation was that 25 per cent of Britons felt foregoing annual vacations was something they did not want to do.

Analysing the budgets UK holidaymakers had set themselves for staycations, the study found the average payout would be £600. This is set to give the country’s economy a £17 billion shot in the arm.

Travelodge spokesperson Shakila Ahmed explained that the lower buying power of the pound had likely been a contributory factor in decisions to choose staycations. She added that the deflated value of the pound was also enticing overseas tourists to select holidays in Great Britain.
