Travel Trade Gazette has named Middle Eastern airline Etihad Airways as its top airline in the UK for 2015. The UK based travel magazine awarded delegates from the airline the prestigious prize at a ceremony staged at London’s heritage Lyceum Theatre.
Etihad chief commercial officer Peter Baumgartner said receiving the Airline of the Year award was a delight for all the airline’s staff. He added that he was personally thrilled for the airline to be honoured by TTG.
Mr Baumgartner continued by saying that the UK had been a key market for the airline since it inaugurated its first service to London Heathrow Airport back in 2004. He noted that the UK was one of the planet’s most competitive markets for airlines and to take the top prize was praise indeed.
The weekly magazine for the travel industry is operated by TTG Media. Etihad also garnered kudos for its ongoing SuperSeller programme. More than 2,500 travel agents in the UK utilise the programme to book flights. The airline was cited for its imaginative promo campaigns such as Winning Re-imagined.
The United Arab Emirates carrier is based at Abu Dhabi International Airport and operates around 150 flights a day. Six of these are to the UK. In addition to Heathrow, Etihad flies to Manchester and Edinburgh. The maiden flight on the latter route was 8 June 2015.
At the end of last year, Etihad chose Heathrow as the first destination for its Airbus A380s. Etihad has incorporated innovative features into its A380s and these include The Residence. This is a suite consisting of a living room, a private bathroom and a twin bedroom. The Residence comes with personal butler service.
