TUI Travel in the UK & Ireland is beginning to put more pressure on its hotel partners in an overall effort to improve the sustainability of its business.
The travel company has said that it will audit an additional 400 hotels under its Travelife scheme, which is aimed at encouraging hoteliers to look after their employees, the environment and their local communities.
If all of the 400 hotels meet the audit criteria it would mean that 50 per cent of its UK customers would stay at a more sustainable property while on holiday, according to a TUI statement.
Currently, TUI is recruiting two advisors on regional sustainability to assist in conducting the six-day audits of all the hotels and to provide guidance to quality co-ordinators at resorts around the world.
All of TUI’s hotel contracts will now contain a sustainable development agreement. The terms of the contract call for hoteliers to either initiate, or continue to develop, a comprehensive sustainability programme.
David Burling, TUI Travel’s commercial director, said: “Sustainability is a key focus for TUI Travel and we are dedicated to increasing hoteliers’ understanding of their impact on the environment. Together with our suppliers, we’re seeking to make all areas of our operations more sustainable.”
He went on to say: “Soon, customers will know that if they book a holiday through Thomson or First Choice, their hotel will have signed a contract agreeing to initiate a sustainability programme – otherwise, they wouldn’t be featured in our brochures.”
