Twenty per cent of Britons who went on holiday abroad in 2008 said they would consider taking their holiday in the UK this year in order to save money, according to a new study.

The new domestic tourism organisation VisitEngland released the results of the study in London at the first ever Best of Britain and Ireland trade show.

The tourism body has announced that it will launch a £3 million promotional campaign that focuses on the value of breaks and longer holidays in England.

Advertising campaigns on television and in the national press are planned for April.

According to the VisitEngland study, 90 per cent of holidaymakers are cutting back on the amount they spend on travel, but the importance of breaks to them means that holidays are “more protected” than many other expenditures.

Sixty-three per cent of those participating in the study said they are planning to take a holiday – or at least a short break – in England in the coming year.

VisitBritain, the national tourism agency, is predicting a “tipping point” for UK tourism this year.

Sandie Dawe, the deputy chief executive of the group, said: “As well as generating more business for the industry to help tide them through the challenging economic climate, Best of Britain and Ireland will be a key opportunity for us to capture the imagination of the five million extra Britons considering taking a holiday here instead of abroad.”
