Two airlines commit to Newquay despite fuel costs
Posted on: July 1st, 2008 by Martin FellowesTwo UK airlines are recommitting to the Newquay Airport after one route was recently cancelled due to soaring fuel costs.
Air Southwest, the airport’s largest operator, and Flybe, both reconfirmed their support to Newquay this week.
Their pledge of support comes on the heels of a Flybe announcement regarding the scrapping of its Newquay Glasgow route beginning in August, due to the dramatic increases in the cost of fuel.
Rising fuel costs are having an impact on carriers and airports around the world.
Australian carrier Qantas announced earlier this week that it anticipates route cuts and staff layoffs, due to the rising costs of fuel – unless conditions improve.
In stark contrast, however, Lufthansa initiated a new weekly service from Dusseldorf’s international airport to Newquay. The carrier reports strong forward bookings with seat load factors topping 71% for July.
As Newquay continues its expansion, increasing the number of global destinations it services, Air Southwest – one of the first carriers at the airport – reaffirmed its commitment to the airport, even as it faces skyrocketing fuel bills.
Mike Coombes, Southwest Airlines deputy chief executive, said: “As the largest operator at Newquay Cornwall Airport, Air Southwest remains committed to offering customers excellent value for money with all-inclusive fares.
“Our fares include a fuel supplement of £3 per flight, and there are no hidden extras.
“Our Glasgow service from Newquay has been a popular addition to our route network, and means we now offer eight destinations from Cornwall year-round, plus a winter ski service to Grenoble.”
