In the run up to the hotly anticipated London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, Britain is planning on hosting a world class sporting event every two weeks from a thousand days before the opening ceremony. To get us all in the mood for games there will be everything from cycling, athletics and sailing held across 20 cities and towns including Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh. It kicks off today in Manchester as they will hold the UCI Track Cycling World Cup with a number of British Olympic heroes. Sir Chris Hoy will also be there to make an appearance as a guest.
The UK is expecting around 17,000 sports stars from across the world and the aim is to give our best athletes the chance to compete on home soil backed by an army of British fans as well as seeing other top athletes in action. Sebastian Coe said he cannot wait for the events to get under way and hopefully it will leave a great feel for more sporting events to be held in the UK after the Olympics is over.
There will be a total of 30 different sports covering both the Olympics and the Paralympics events. So far, 25 events have been confirmed and are set for the ready. Organisers hope to confirm the remaining 39 events very soon so the British public can get tickets and come and see their sporting heroes perform. It looks set to become the most comprehensive list of activities that has ever led up to an Olympic Games and will take some beating. All that needs now to come is an opening ceremony that tops China’s in 2008.
