UK’s Top Tea Rooms
Posted on: April 20th, 2007 by Frank ToddThe UK Tea Council has just announced its annual awards for the best places to take tea in the UK. The council’s team of inspectors have been travelling the country taking tea in tearooms and hotels to find the best venue for this great British tradition.
The points awarded to each establishment by this undercover team are based on the standard of service, décor, value for money and of course the range of teas offered to the consumer. The inspectors also assess the overall ‘tea taking’ experience in each of the visited establishments.
The winner this year of the prestigious ‘Top Tea Place 2007 Award’ was Peacock’s Tearoom in Ely, Cambridgeshire. The owners’ of the tearoom, George Peacock and Rachel Lemkov offer a very warm welcome into the attractively decorated premises. There is a display of tea memorabilia and a shelf of books relating to tea. There is also a pretty garden which is utilised in the summer months.
The menu was described by the judges as extensive and full of interesting, witty and helpful information. But above all of course the quality of the tea, cakes and sandwiches was superb. So if you find yourself in Ely then Peacock’s is a must if you enjoy a nice cup of tea.
The other prestigious award, ‘Top London Afternoon Tea 2007,’ was awarded to The Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane. Competition was fierce in this category but The Dorchester pipped the others to the post with its array of teas from around the world. The choice of sandwiches, scones and pastries was found to be excellent. The overall experience of taking tea at The Dorchester was very highly rated.
