UK Air Force jets scramble for Gaddafi attacks

British war planes deployed today are massing close to Libya as the West waits to see if Gaddafi will keep his promise of a ceasefire.

After PM David Cameron ordered the RAF to attack Libyan government forces, Tornado and Typhoon jets joined with other international operations to protect the Libyan people against the dictator and his army. Mr Cameron suspects Gaddafi’s swift declaration of a ceasefire is just another ploy by the regime to avoid being attacked.

Already reports are coming in that government forces are still bombing and shelling rebel strongholds, with sources in the French government stating reprisals by the West are just hours away. According to French spokesman François Baron, air strikes will take place soon.’ A final ultimatum will be sent to the dictator tonight.

The attacks are expected to begin with bombing raids aimed at knocking out the Libyan forces’ air defence systems as a preparation for a no-fly zone. RAF planes are already on standby in Cyprus, with more expected to base themselves in Corsica and Spain. In an earlier speech to the Commons, Mr Cameron had reminded MPs they were dealing with a despot responsible for the Lockerbie atrocity.

A war summit will take place tomorrow between the UK, France and Arab leaders, with Gaddafi forces still fighting a counter-offensive at Misrata, where rebels are still standing their ground. Earlier today the streets of the important oil town were filled with wildly cheering people celebrating the UN Security Council’s decision until the heavy artillery shells began falling again and the tanks rolled in.
