UK and Australia governments issue travel alerts for the Philippines

manila airportThe Australian government has joined that of the UK in issuing a travel alert for the Philippines. The just issued travel advice from Australia echoes that released by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) late last month saying terror attacks were almost a certainty.

The UK’s latest travel advice warned Brits holidaying or doing business in the Philippines not to venture into rural areas. This followed a previous one saying most regions of Mindanao Island and the smaller islands around it were too dangerous to visit.

The FCO explained the reason Mindanao and rural areas were not safe was that militant groups were present and active in these locations. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) for Australia cites the same problem as the reason Australians should rethink any plans to visit the Philippines.

The Australian alert expands the no-go areas for tourists. It says Mindanao and in particular its capital city, Marawi, in addition to the national capital of Manila are among the high risk areas. The warning continues by saying Australians need to be alert to the threat of terror attacks in any locations where protective security is not in place.

The DFA says terrorists often instigate outrages in places which include shopping centres and markets, transport interchanges and Metro trains, hotels, parks and even nightlife precincts. Police are maintaining a high profile presence in the Philippines at present while martial law in Mindanao has been extended through to the New Year.
