UK DVLA issued licences may be invalid for Europe driving post Brexit

IDPAccording to the latest reports from the European Union, requirements for UK drivers in Europe will change once the Brexit divorce is finalised. A report on a recent meeting reveals plans are afoot to rescind the right of British drivers to drive in Europe with their DVLA issued licences.

The minutes of the meeting claim the proposal is for presentational purposes but say the communal recognition of driving licences from the UK should be scrapped after Brexit. The ending of the driving licence concession is part of a raft of proposals to revoke the rights of Brits in Europe once the UK is no longer an EU nation.

According to Auto Express, in addition to losing the right to use their licences British motorists might find their vehicle registration documents need some kind of extra certification for EU driving. Truck drivers are also likely to be caught up in the fallout from Brexit and may have to obtain additional certification for EU driving.

Auto Express notes that one possible solution, albeit not a long term one, to the dilemma for Brits is the International Driving Permit (IDP). IDPs are recognised as a certificate of driving competency by the approximate 140 countries which have signed on to the Geneva Road Traffic Convention of 1949.

Auto Express says the drawback here is that five EU nations including Germany have not ratified the convention. Other downsides of having to resort to IDPs are a price tag of £5.50, they have to be pre-applied for and have life-spans of just 12 months.
