UK Foreign Office places North Korea on no go list

Pyongyang North KoreaThe UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office has issued an update to its travel advice for North Korea. The FCO advice says Brits should avoid the rogue Asian state altogether and only travel there if it is absolutely essential.

The update noted there was a distinct likelihood North Korea would be conducting more nuclear missile tests. It carried on by saying this would probably lead to instability in the nation and its neighbour, South Korea.

Regarding South Korea, the FCO says there is no change in its travel advice. This section explained that while the FCO did not specifically advise against visiting, Britons should bear in mind tensions were at a high level on the whole of the Korean peninsula and volatile situations could develop with little or no warning.

The advice for North Korea stated that the security situation could deteriorate without any warnings and this could be a major issue for any British travellers in the nation. The advisory also carried the caution that committing minor criminal acts in North Korea could have serious consequences and lead to long terms in jail.

UK travel industry analysts say not many Britons are among the average 100,000 foreign tourists a year who visit North Korea. Brits who do go there typically join tours. The analysts say tours are mostly insured and operators should be offering refunds on any packages already booked and paid for.

Another issue with a Foreign Office ‘all but essential travel’ warning is that people who do not follow the advice are unable to get holiday insurance cover. The only exemptions are for people who are already in the no go area when the warnings are first issued.
