UK hit by overnight floods
Posted on: November 4th, 2009 by Robert BergersonFloods swept through parts of the UK after heavy rain and strong winds ravaged communities overnight. The cleanup operation is now underway, and it is expected to take a few days to clear the debris left in the wake of the storm. Stonehaven and Huntly in Scotland were two of the worst affected towns with 40 elderly residents residing in a nursing home in Huntly having to move out of the building in the middle of the night through fears of damage or flooding.
A river in Stonehaven burst its banks and the town was badly affected by the excess water that gushed through the town. A total of 50 people in Stonehaven had to be rescued from their houses. In the Scottish Premier League, a match between Dundee United and Glasgow Rangers was abandoned after 45 minutes due to poor visibility with the heavy rain. The rail line between Aberdeen and Inverness and Dundee has had severely disrupted services and many are still not yet back to normal.
The River Deveron, which flows close to Huntly, increase by eight feet in just over 24 hours; the highest level it has ever reached since the records began in 1959. Authorities issued weather warnings around the UK through Sepa in a bid to minimise the effects of the flooding on businesses and homes. More rain has been forecast over the next few days but it is unlikely that the rain will hit with such force. There is, however, a flood warning that was issued on the River Spey that runs from Spey Bay to Fochabers.
