UK holidaymakers not making full disclosures on insurance

According to research recently released, at least 1.2 million UK holidaymakers have put their travel cover in jeopardy by not informing their insurers of pre-existing medical conditions.

In a report published by Sainsbury’s Finance earlier this week, it was also noted than as many as half a million Britons having medical conditions travelled overseas during the last 12 months without travel cover.

Sainsbury’s Finance has estimated that more than a quarter million Britons having heart conditions failed to disclose the condition to their insurance companies, and more than 200,000 people with respiratory disorders also failed to do so.

The fear of being turned down for insurance or the higher cost of cover during the recession were the major reasons given by UK travellers for failing to fully disclose their pre-existing conditions.

When insurers assess the risk, a slightly higher premium is often charged, but they will typically issue cover for most all medial conditions.

Sainsbury’s travel insurance manager, Sam Marrs, commented that travelling without insurance cover or withholding information about pre-existing conditions is just not worth the risk.

“Withholding key information such as any medical conditions could, however, mean your cover may be invalidated and in the worst of cases, this could mean facing large hospital bills or arranging your own repatriation,” Marrs explained.
