UK man reported murdered in Thailand

The Foreign Office has confirmed that a man from Derby has been found murdered in Thailand’s northern city of Chiang Mai.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the death of a British national in Chiang Mai in Thailand. We were notified by police on January 22.”

The spokeswoman added that police are attempting to contact his next of kin. Although he was resident in Thailand, it is thought that he was originally from Derby.

According to the Derby Evening Telegraph, Thai police were alerted when neighbours reported that a car that seem to have been abandoned. His body, with his throat reportedly cut, was found inside his house.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Thanadon Noisuwan informed the newspaper that “the car was parked at another gated community.” He added: “A sticker on the car indicated that the car’s owner did not live in that gated community, which raised the suspicion.”

The police officer said that a security guard at the gated community where the victim lived saw two Thai men driving his car out of the community two days before his body was found.

Chiang Mai is Thailand’s largest northern city, and is very popular with foreign visitors, attracting thousands of tourists each year. The city is located approximately 435 miles north of Bangkok, and has a relatively large community of expatriates.
