UK motorists willing to consider smaller cars
Posted on: October 9th, 2008 by Samantha WilliamsAccording to the results of a new survey conducted by Avis, as many as 58 per cent of motorists in the UK would be willing to drive a smaller car, or seriously consider doing so, if the financial crisis in the country continues.
Avis has determined that the average UK family would save as much as £7,792 annually by downsizing the car they use on a daily basis, and hiring a vehicle when they need something larger. This would not only control costs, but also be an environmentally-responsible practice, according to the rental car company.
An example put forth by the car hire giant involves a family needing a vehicle daily for short trips around town and occasional outings, including the annual holiday. If, for example, the family owns a Range Rover Sport 2.7TD HSE, lives in Westminster and travels 12,000 miles annually, their annual motoring cost, inclusive of depreciation, fuel, insurance, maintenance, parking and road tax would total £13,283.
If, however, that same family owned a Peugeot 107, lived in Westminster and travelled the same distances, but substituted a hired, large estate car on nine weekends and for one 10-day period during the year, their annual costs for motoring would be reduced by £7,792.
Not only would this scenario save families a significant amount of money each year, it would benefit the environment as well, as the Peugeot 107 averages 61.4mpg and has CO2 emissions of 109g/km.
