As the credit crunch rolls on, many people are choosing to holiday at home and in preparation for the up and coming summer holidays in the UK, Carrentals.co.uk launched a survey aimed at finding out what drivers really thought about motorway service stations. The car hire experts not only found that snacks are too expensive and the toilets are not clean enough, but that Brits also enjoy using them as a place for an illicit rendezvous.

As many as 1 in 6 people have thought about an affair at a service station and 1 in 20 people actually have. Maybe not so shocking were the revelations that out of the 2,300 people questioned, 1 in 5 thought the standard of toilet cleanliness was not up to scratch and almost 60% claimed that the price of food and drink was far too high.

“This survey was designed to look at just what people think of motorway service stations, particularly the prices charged, and also the experiences they have had in them. The level of illicit romantic liaisons came as a complete surprise to us, but when you look at the most popular locations they all tend to be around the main travel routes through the country so service stations must make convenient, and secret, meeting places,” commented Gareth Robinson, managing director of Carrentals.co.uk.

A high percentage of women admitted that they spend more on snacks if they are accompanied by their children and the Midlands and the North West of the UK are the most common places to carry out a road side tryst.
