UK travel chaos continues due to treacherous weather
Posted on: February 4th, 2009 by Martin FellowesHeavy snows and icy conditions that disrupted travel and businesses in many parts of the UK on Monday and Tuesday are expected to continue, with the treacherous weather moving to other parts of the country, according to forecasts by the Met Office.
According to the Met Office, parts of south-western England, Wales and Northern Scotland face the greatest risk of additional snow as the week progresses.
On Monday, the UK was hit with the heaviest snow in 18 years, and road conditions in the areas that were hit hardest are likely to remain dangerous as a drop in temperatures leads to icy roadways.
The Highways Agency is reporting that most of the country’s major roads and motorways are open and clear, but still recommends postponing of all non-essential travel in areas worst-affected.
Met Office forecaster, Helen Chivers, said that much of Britain would see brighter skies on Wednesday, but showers in western areas, mixed with sleet or snow are likely.
Winter sports enthusiasts, however, have welcomed the wintry weather. Skiers were seen in Truro and in Hayle, taking to the hills and also in Horsforth Hall park outside Leeds.
