UK travel insurance scam uncovered
Posted on: November 18th, 2008 by Taylor SmithA warning to UK holidaymakers has been issued by EssentialTravel.co.uk after it identified what looks to be a travel insurance scam.
The travel operator is advising purchasers of holiday insurance who receive a letter from Blue Swan Travel indicating that they owe money to the company to seek advice before complying with the request. This warning is relevant to customers who took out insurance cover between 1 April 2004 and 20 November 2005.
During that period a number of travel operators sold and issued holiday travel insurance policies to customers, underwritten by Blue Swan Insurance Jersey Ltd.
Subsequently, the underwriter went into receivership, meaning that all of its policies and any outstanding claims became void.
It has recently been brought to the attention of EssentialTravel.co.uk that a claims company was formed, called ATM Travel Services Ltd, trading under the name Blue Swan Travel, and associated with Blue Swan Insurance Jersey Ltd.
It seems that Blue Swan Travel has written to claimants of Blue Swan Insurance Jersey Ltd, requesting money related to the claims that they had made on their holiday travel insurance policies.
“Many of the former policy holders are vulnerable pensioners, and in some cases we understand that the sums being requested are in excess of £10,000,” the company asserted in a statement. “EssentialTravel.co.uk has been informed of at least one pensioner who has paid the requested amount.”
