Knoydart Peninsula, considered by many to be the last wilderness area in Britain, may see electric cars introduced for local transport.

The area, covering approximately 44,000 acres in the west Highlands, is community owned, and includes Assynt.

Assynt Renewables, the community company, is currently considering options that would see a reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

In addition to considering electric cars, the community is conducting energy audits to establish the area’s carbon footprint. Homes will be insulated and clusters of houses may be linked in micro-renewable schemes.

Other proposals under consideration include an increased use of locally-grown wood as fuel, and increased use of local produce to reduce food miles. Venison and seafood are two of the local food possibilities, and processing of local food is being considered as well.

The Assynt Foundation development manager, Mark Lazzeri, who is also a member of the Assynt Renewables board, has commented that the local effort would begin with small initiatives. “We will investigate ways to make the most of the resources we have around us from food to fuel sources.”
