UN climate change talks see agreement of deal

UN talks in the Mexican City of Cancun have sealed a deal to prevent climate change, which includes a fund to aid developing countries.

The nations present endorsed compromise texts that were drawn up by the Mexicans, despite  heavy objections from South American nation Bolivia. The draft documents tell how further cuts in carbon emissions will be required, but don’t establish a suitable mechanism for being able to achieve the pledges that countries have made. Many countries’ resistance to Kyoto Protocol had provided a stumbling block over the last week of negotiations. Despite this however, diplomats were finally ale to reach a compromise.

Delegates cheered for speeches from governments that caused the most friction in the height of the negotiations – which included Japan, China, and even the US, as they one by one endorsed the draft. According to some media sources however, the meeting didn’t achieve a comprehensive, all-encompassing agreement that many activists as well as governments wanted. Despite this though, they are hopes that those already made can act as a platform to build other developments upon.

After the summit, Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon told that leaders were now able to get a  glimpse of new horizons while  countries should now be clear that they have a shared task of keeping the planet healthy as well as safe safe from being harmed by humans. When asked, UK leader David Cameron reflected Calderon’s sentiments by pointing out that the world must now deliver on its promises. All in all, The Green Climate Fund intends to raise and then disburse $100bn a year by the year 2020.
