Underground crowds getting too large
Posted on: December 1st, 2009 by Samantha WilliamsA recent report by the London assembly has said that more than 80 per cent of Tube users have experienced overcrowding on Underground trains. The shocking level of people crammed onto trains has caused a large number of travellers to have to get themselves mentally ready for travelling on the Tube. The report has suggested that Transport for London (TfL) should install some sort of traffic light system so passengers can gage how busy the trains will be.
TfL has already stated that they are working on spending billions of pounds on the Underground network to make more space for their customers. They aim to increase train size and frequency and get people from stop to quicker than the levels they are at now. Larger stations will also help to alleviate the anxiety some people have about going onto the Underground network.
The report went on to describe the actions of some travellers and how they cope with the crowded spaces. Some passengers would be ruthless in getting a seat and leave the elderly and pregnant standing while pretending not to notice, other would need a distraction while on the train like listening to music or having to look away from the crowds.
TfL are always looking at way they can make their services better for passengers and improving the layout of the Tube could well help increase the number of people that use the trains. Many people who travel on tubes for work everyday end up sacrificing comfort just to get to work on time or end up arriving incredibly early just to avoid the crush of rush hour.
