United Kingdom tourism marks strong summer performance
Posted on: August 8th, 2008 by Benjamin TierAccording to the most recent statistics, Britain’s tourism industry has performed very well this summer, thanks in large part to the fact that an increasing number of British families are turning away from expensive foreign, overseas or continental European holidays, and are instead choosing more modest vacations closer to home. LastMinute.com, a ,major online travel booking site, has indicated that the number of Britons reserving holidays in the UK has jumped by 16 percent, compared to figures from the same period last year.
Brighton appears to be one of the most popular domestic holiday destinations among Britons and the fact that this resort town was included in a number of international surveys as having some of the top beaches, it is no surprise that UK citizens are increasingly deciding to avoid expensive airplane tickets and are staying home instead. LastMinute.com also listed Bournemouth and Eastbourne as growing in popularity.
Yet British tourism is getting a boost from continental Europeans as well, who are flocking to the UK in larger numbers than before. VisitBritain noted that the number of Spanish tourists has increased by around 1.5 million over the course of the past several years, and there are more Italians travelling to the UK , along with an increase in Dutch visitors. LastMinute.com told the Telegraph that part of the reason for Britain’s increasing popularity among Europeans is that the pound has been relatively weak against the euro for the past several months.
Thank you to Alice Klein of the Telegraph for the initial report.
