Urgent landing for Emirates jet in Australia

An Emirates aircraft that had taken off from Perth in West Australia was forced to turn around and make an urgent landing at the same airport on Thursday after a burning smell was reported on board.

The plane landed safely in Perth as crew frantically searched for the cause of the smell that had frightened the more than 100 passengers on board the flight, according to witnesses and a spokesperson for the airline.

The cause of the burning smell on the Airbus A340-500 was not known, and would be the subject of an investigation.

Emirates flight 425 had 120 passengers on board and had departed from Perth, in western Australia, and was on route to Dubai when it was forced to return to Perth about two hours after it had taken off. The plane landed without incident or injury to anyone on board.

Aircraft engineers have begun an investigation into the cause of the smell.

“The decision to return to Perth was a precautionary measure one and a half hours into the flight and all passengers disembarked normally after the plane landed,” noted the airline in a statement.

“Emergency services were activated as per standard procedure but were not required. Safety was not compromised at any point,” the statement added.

Emirates confirmed that all passengers were rescheduled on a later flight operated by the airline.
