Car rental operators in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on popular Cape Breton Island, are facing a shortage of vehicles during their busiest season.
Dan Fogarty, who manages Discount Car and Truck Rental in Sydney, said: “We’re very fearful this year that the cars will not be available, especially from the Big Three.”
Ongoing upheaval in the auto industry has raised concerns among many rental companies about having a sufficient number of cars for the summer months.
As car sales fell at Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, many factories shut down, reducing the number of vehicles available.
On Monday, General Motors filed for creditor protection, just one day after a judge in the US approved the sale of most of Chrysler’s assets to Fiat.
Fogarty said that during a typical tourist season, his company doubles the number of vehicles on hand to meet visitor demand. Although he placed this year’s order several months ago, the cars still haven’t arrived.
“The thing about the summer is that you rent all your vehicles all the time. So having less vehicles will just make things much more tricky. The size of my fleet right now is not the size that I planned for it to be,” he said.
Another rental car company, Enterprise, told CBC News that the problem is local to Sydney and that there were plenty of vehicles available in Halifax.
