Violent attack shocks Greyhound passengers in Canada
Posted on: September 22nd, 2008 by Andy SimpsonCanada has been shocked by a violent attack on a Greyhound bus, less than two months after the brutal killing and beheading of another passenger on a coach operated by the same company. According to a CTV News report, the current incident occurred in rural Ontario, near White River, and the victim was a twenty year old male passenger. The bus was en route to Winnipeg, having departed from Toronto, when another passenger contacted police using his mobile phone to inform them of the violence occurring on the vehicle.
The victim of the violence was reportedly stabbed by David Roberts, a resident of Manitouwadge (Ontario). The suspect was taken into custody soon after police arrived on the scene and CTV reported that he was being charged with aggravated assault. The victim is still being treated in hospital, but according to media reports, he is likely to make a full recovery.
The most recent stabbing, as well as the shocking killing and eventual beheading of passenger Tim McKean in late July has some people concerned about their safety on Greyhound vehicles. When reporters from CTV tried to contact Greyhound, the coach company would not go into specific details, due to the police investigation. A company spokesperson did, however, point out that the firm would cooperate with Transport Canada in order to find a way to augment the security of all passengers. But Greyhound effectively dismissed suggestions that it should use metal detectors, x-ray machines or search passengers, or implement other security measures that are reminiscent of airports.
Thank you to CTV News for the initial report.
