With the lack of airline service between Liverpool and London, Virgin Trains is looking to move into the London to Glasgow market.
Tony Collins, the Virgin Trains CEO, said that train trip times can be shortened, and that the journey from London to central Glasgow could be reduced to under four hours. He confirmed that the rail operator was planning timetables for the West Coast Main Line that were even better. The West Coast Line links Scotland, North West England, North Wales and the West Midlands with London.
The rail share of the air-rail market has risen to 100 per cent on the Liverpool route and is up to 77 per cent for Manchester. Five years ago its share of the Glasgow to London air-rail market was just six per cent, but rose to 11 per cent by February of this year. The typical journey time from London is 4 hours 31 minutes.
The rail executive said that Virgin Trains is looking at opportunities to improve train speeds and to add extra trains.
Virgin is aiming to improve journey times for Manchester, Liverpool and North Wales, as well as for Glasgow, and to deliver new London service for Nuneaton and additional trains for West Midlands passengers.
