Volvo jumps on electric bandwagon and will phase out petrol

S60 VolvoThe Chinese owner of Volvo Cars has announced that in two years time all models produced will be either electric or hybrid vehicles. Zhejiang Geely stated five models scheduled for release from 2019 onwards would be electric only.

Three of the models will carry the Volvo marque and the other two will be Polestar. The statement explained that the five models would be complemented by a collection of electric hybrid-petrol and diesel powered options.

What Volvo does say is that all of its models will in future be equipped with electric motors. Hakan Samuelsson, the CEO of Volvo Cars, confirmed that Volvo models powered exclusively by fossil fuels would be consigned to the history books.

Volvo’s electric cars will be built at all its manufacturing facilities in Europe, China and a soon to launch US one. Mr Samuelsson said the cost of developing the new electric models would be covered by existing budget allocations, but did add that there would be none left over to develop entirely new internal combustion engines.

Zhejiang Geely bought Volvo from Ford seven years ago and has since ploughed funds into new factories, cars and enhancing the brand’s standing in the luxury vehicle sector. The revamped business has taken technology on board which is designed to improve the performances of electric engines.

Volvo is the first of the big carmakers to publicly announce the end of its traditional engine production. According to the schedule of operations, Volvo’s initial range of all-eclectic models will be made in China and the first one is due to roll off the production line in 2019.
