VW Beetle bites the dust again

Dead BeetleCar maker Volkswagen has confirmed it plans to stop manufacturing its iconic Beetle. VW Technical development director Frank Welsch recently told media sources the classic car had gone through enough incarnations for the time being and it was time to call it a day.

He carried on by saying there had already been five versions of the Beetle since the first ones rolled off the production lines back in 1938. He explained that it would be too tall an order to try and come up with a completely new Beetle.

Mr Welsch did not specify the exact date when VW would pull the plug on the Beetle production lines. In the US, spokesperson Jeannine Ginivan told USA Today the Beetle would be around for the foreseeable future but VW would not be developing a new generation edition.

Confirmation of the Beetle’s demise has laid to rest rumours it might be given a new lease life of life as one of VW’s flagship electric models. Frank Welsch says VW has instead opted for the forthcoming ID Buzz Microbus as the signature model to carry the maker’s marque through to the next decades of the 21st century.

Beetle production has been flattened before yet this time it looks as if the death could be permanent unless a retro model is introduced in 20 years time to mark the centenary anniversary of the original. The last time the Beetle was killed, supposedly for good, was in 2003 but a new model was released eight years later.
