Where car hire hurts…
Posted on: July 18th, 2007 by Dave Andersonis an overriding factor that the car hire companies are sticking together.
Comparison shows the rental prices for a small vehicle costs are all very similar and this can only be if there are collusive pricing practices between the car rental companies. The price range is just so comparative and this can be lost in any subtle differences like free kilometre adjustment, price per kilometre, extras on the car and so on. Prices may even vary from day to day, making comparisons deliberately difficult especially if you are on a budget.
There are as many prices as there are, package deals, promotions, and special discounts. In effect prices change daily if not hourly and are always subject to change without notice. Trying to get a good deal with such moving targets is an almost impossible task.
Hidden costs
There also seem to be a clear policy of disguising the true make up of the charges. While a client is presented with one rate plus a ‘contract fee’, in fact there are no less than eight components to the total cost, one of which is fuel and does not seem to be is mentioned until you are presented with the bill.
The client will be forgiven for assuming ‘free 200 kms per day’ would include petrol. But in fact the free kilometres actually means free of charge for distance travelled.
It is a jungle out there
