An airline pilot from the UK told Dubai police that his wife of 14 years was having an affair, which led to her being arrested and jailed – even though he said he later tried to have the charges against her dropped.
Vincent Antia, in his first public statement since his wife was jailed, claims that he visited her regularly at the jail and that their relationship remained “very amicable”.
He said that reports saying they were estranged before he reported her to the police were not true.
Antia added that he tried to withdraw the complaint regarding her affair around one month ago, but was told by Dubai authorities that it was too late to do so.
“Prior to May 2 Sally and I were not estranged and we were not involved in any divorce proceedings, acrimonious or otherwise,” Antia said in a statement this week that was emailed to reporters after his wife Sally spent two months in jail.
Mark Hawkins, the boyfriend, flew to Dubai from Liverpool to meet her after they had become acquainted on the Internet. He was also jailed for two months.
“Sally was having an affair with Mark Hawkins and this clearly was destroying our marriage,” Antia’s statement went on to say.
