William and Kate request charity donations, not wedding presents

Prince William and bride-to-be Kate Middleton have requested well-wishers should donate to charity in lieu of wedding presents.

A gift fund is to be organised and will incorporate many of the couple’s favourite good causes, including conservation, children, the armed forces, the elderly, art and sport, with wedding guests and other well-wishers asked to donate rather than give wedding presents.

In, perhaps, a flash-back to Princess Diana with her famous love of charities, each on the wedding gift list will have been hand picked by William and Kate, with many small local cash-strapped projects included, all of which expressed their delight at being included.

Gareth Harper from the Northern Ireland group Peace Players International said he’d met the couple last week and was thrilled with their knowledge about the group’s work involving the bringing together of Catholic and Protestant kids to play basketball.

A statement from St James’ Palace explained further, saying many of the charities are not well-known and don’t have Royal patronage, but undertake great work in specific communities. All, it continued, have a particular resonance for the Prince and his bride and reflect projects of special interest to them. One recipient group, Dance United, which uses contemporary dance training to change disadvantaged young people’s live, was especially thrilled at the recognition of its work.

A number of the selected charities work with disadvantaged children, with others in New Zealand, Canada and Australia reflecting the couple’s affection for these countries. The grant will be held in a special account by the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry before being distributed in partnership with the charities concerned.
